Inaugural Dialogues: Forging Partnerships for Aviation-Wildlife Coexistence

The First Aviation-Wildlife Coexistence Workshop, led by GCSL’s PhD student Shu Chen, successfully took place in November, marking a pivotal moment in connecting the conservation and aviation sectors. Supported by the University of Queensland’s Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science, this initiative aims to enhance aviation safety, reduce wildlife strike risks, optimise operational costs, and minimise environmental impacts through innovative, cross-sector collaboration.

With over 30 participants from diverse backgrounds, the workshop featured interactive sessions and engaging discussions with experts, including representatives from the Australian Aviation Wildlife Hazard Group. This dynamic platform united conservationists and aviation professionals to share ideas and develop solutions that harmonise aviation operations and biodiversity conservation.

A highlight of the event was an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to Brisbane Airport, where attendees interacted with the airport’s sustainability and wildlife management teams. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into the operational challenges and strategies employed to ensure coexistence between aviation and wildlife.
